Peninsula Pipeline Seismic Upgrade – Phase II
San Francisco, California
This project was to seismically upgrade San Andreas Pipeline No. 2 and Sunset Supply Pipeline to address ground shaking, ground settlement and liquefaction related seismic hazards within the Colma Valley and at four sites within San
Francisco.
The four site locations were Area 1: San Francisco Golf Course, Area 2: Sloat Boulevard, Area 3: Stern Grove, Area 4: 25th Avenue. Special
measures were taken to protect existing utility facilities, including working around or, relocating overhead and underground utilities on all sites
Work included the removal of existing 36-inch and 54-inch steel pipes and providing the necessary tees, gate valves, and butterfly valves (36 & 64 inches), as well as furnishing and installing new steel piping of the same sizes
using open trench construction in each area. Additionally, trenchless installation was used for the 54″ steel pipe at Area 3 in Stern Grove. Approximately 611 linear feet of 54″ pipe was constructed in Area 3 and included constructing
launch and retrieval areas for carrier pipe construction and the 54” steel pipe trenchless installation.
The work also encompassed various tasks including but not limited to earthwork, excavation, paving, trucking and hauling (including the removal of hazardous soil), in-ground fire water systems, concrete work, reinforcing steel, shoring,
dewatering, and obtaining encroachment permits.
San Francisco Residents well-loved Stern Grove included Mitchell Engineering working with San Francisco Recreation and Parks to make sure the Summer Concert Series and Halloween activities was not impacted for San Francisco residents
and visitors.
